Health Care Waste Management Implementation Project (Crimson Hospital, Tillotama)



Health Care Waste Management (HCWM) Implementation Project at Crimson Hospital Health care waste management implementation project at Crimson hospital was a project between Crimson Hospital and Waste Service Pvt. Ltd. as a consultant partner which began from the third week of October until November 2021 (45days).
The objectives of the project were:
General Objective:
To implement the health care waste management system in Crimson hospital to reduce the public health risk of health care waste.

Specific Objectives:
  • To strengthen good governance in health care waste management through developing standard operating procedure, capacity development by training and coordination with local government and different stakeholders.
  • To develop a healthcare waste management plan and employ best practice in hospital. To initiate pilot program in specific ward and to ensure its sustainability.
  • To develop the monitoring, recording and reporting system of waste management and its documentation.

Activities of Implementation Process:

Phase I:  Institutionalization Objectives activities achieved through institutionalization were:
  1. To strengthen governance in HCWM Committee formation Develop HCWM SOP Coordination with concerned province, municipality and stakeholders.
    1.1 Development of HCWM plan Identification of human resources for the management of treatment facility. Development of TOR to staffs at treatment facility. Awareness posters, wall paintings, banners for general information.
    1.2 To employ best practice of HCWM Development of questionnaire (pre-test and post-test). Training to HCWM committee, waste handlers, support staffs, autoclave operators and other health care professionals. Refresher training twice a year.
  2. Institutional Capacity Development 2.1 To ensure the occupational safety and best practices 2.2 Recording and documentation system
  3. Planning: Transport, Treatment and Final Disposal To ensure proper transportation route for waste of each type. To ensure the sustainability of the system


PHASE II: Piloting Phase
  1. To set up role model ward of HCWM system
  2. Review the pilot project * Identify the loophole
  3. Identification of existing problems
  4. Feedback on training outcomes
  5. Addressing existing outcomes
  6. Ensure proper functionality of the system segregation at source
  7. Reporting of the overall functionality of the piloting phase of HCWM officer
  8. Reporting to top management

PHASE III: Propagation
  1. To extend to other wards of hospitals.
  2. Scale up to the maternity ward once the model pilot ward is successful.
  3. Refresher training
  4. Observation model
  5. Propagation to other ward/units.

PHASE IV: Monitoring, Recording and Reporting System
  1. To ensure the functionality of the HCWM system
  2. Recording and reporting of operational activities
    2.1 To strengthen HCWM system

PHASE V: Report Writing
  1. Documentation and sharing - Development of progress report - Development of complete report - Dissemination of final report
